Still a few Atlantic Salmon and Coho in the lower River now but this time of year the shiny prize is a chrome steelhead! We have had some snow and rain this month – water flows have been increasing a bit overall. Still can be some major shut down days. For Steelhead now look to the deep water in the river – sand holes and deeper runs. In the clear water now holes with logs around it or on bottom are ideal. Some nice bright chrome adult fish have been moving in from Lake Huron. Not in big numbers but enough to make for some good steelheading of late! Ideal time to swing a fly down deep and slow.

With cold water temps here to stay for the next couple months deep and slow is the key. Float fishing is very effective now and running them down the logs or over the logs. In clear cold water steelhead like structure. Nymphs are very effective and my favorites are hex, caddis and stones. Egg flies are always effective on steelhead. Many go to jigs and wax worm or spawn this time of year.

I got a few more days of Steelhead fishing on the lower Au Sable this week and then I’m off to Arkansas to run my guide service at the White River Trout Lodge. I will sure be back guiding the entire month of April/May for Steelhead, Atlantic Salmon and Brown Trout. If interested in a trips best is to text or call me on my cell at 989-889-5374
