Winter started to come around a couple weeks ago but snow has melted and feels more like late Fall now! That is ideal for the lower Au Sable. My main focus now is Steelhead but still some very nice holdover Atlantic Salmon in the river now. Most have spawn and returned to Lake Huron but some will stay in the river for a while. These fish are always looking for food – minnow and sculpins are there main river diet. Water levels are very low and not helping the steelhead fishing but there are decent numbers in the river now. Look to the deeper slow runs and holes now. Swing streamers in productive with water temps still in upper 30’s. Egg pattern and nymphs fished down deep are producing the best. Still a few late run Coho in the river and just like with the Atlantic Salmon small streamers are most productive.
