Winter weather and temps came a bit early this year but still a great time for those that like to hunt for big Brown Trout. Stripping streamers is what produces this time of year and we have had some good days of late. The cold water can slow these trout down but most have spawned in the last month and these trout are looking for a big meal. Water levels have been running above normal for this time of year and some snow melt has provide a few spikes which is always good for the streamer bite. This time of year in the Big Waters of the Au Sable we are typically using 9′ 8wt for streamer rods. My favorites are the Winston Salt Air and BIII Plus. Airflo Streamer Max is the fly line we use and 280 grain is ideal. Of late best streamers have been the 3-6″ in length – Great Lakes Deceivers and smaller Slop Mop have both fished well. For colors yellow/olive and chartreuse have worked very well. Also natural sculpin patterns like the Conrad Sculpin have produced well.
