A week ago the Au Sable River was flooded throughout the entire system. Water temps were very cold and much of backwaters in lower river were full of ice. Now today it feels like summer is here! Most of the trout water is in the upper 50’s and some could 60 degrees today. All the snow and ice is finally gone. But I’m sure some snow will still come this spring. Are first major hatch is the Hendrickson and that should get going over the next couple weeks. I would definitely not go on a float now with out dry fly rods rigged! Cooler weather is coming back shortly and what is catching good trout now is strippin streamers.
This warm weather has really kicked in the Steelhead fishing in the lower river! Most our spring run stages in Lake Huron and now with water temps coming up here they come. Some beautiful chrome fish of late!
Water levels are pretty much ideal now in the lower river and have dropped several feet since last week. Look to the deep gravel runs to be holding nice fresh steelhead now. Still a few Atlantics around and streamers are doing the best of them as they search for minnow and sculpins.
With this big warm up my time on the Au Sable will be split between Steelhead and Trout. Often our bigger waters of the Au Sable can sit in the deep freeze for most of April but sure not the case now. I love fishing both so turn out to be an ideal Spring!
