Hatches in the Big Waters of the Au Sable are moving along quickly now. Still a few Dark Hendrickson spinners most nights and fish do key into them at times. The last couple days its been heavy Sulphur hatches in the evening. Along with a few evening spinner falls. Cool temps of late have not help spinner falls but much warmer temps are here now. For big browns look for spinner falls that last well into darkness. There are two Mayflies how that are commonly called Sulphurs. Invaria which many call Light Hendrickson size #12-14. Dorothea which many call Little Sulphur or Pale Evening Dun size #16-18. Currently we have both going on the Au Sable. Many consider this a evening hatch which is it but will last into darkness on hatch and spinner fall. My favorite patterns: Roberts Yellow Drake, Galloup Tilt Wing, Regan Sulphur Spent Wing Spinner, Bat Fly. Been a scattering of larger mayflies already most nights in small numbers – Bat Fly, March Browns & Sand Drake. Very early for many of these but that is the given year! With temps up in the 60’s now crayfish are getting very active and great pattern to fish when hatch is not going on. Iso nymph dropper makes the crayfish even better. This heat the next few days should put Stone into big numbers also – small yellow size #12, small olive #12 and a few large golden size #4-8.
A few nights ago on very cool evening. Fish were feeding well on dries right up till dark. Regan Dark Hendrickson spinner size #14 got this one.
