Most think of these as fish the returns in the Fall on the Au Sable River but there is some good action in very lower river/mouth/Lake Huron. These are not colored up fish getting ready to spawn. These bright silver and move in close to shore and river to do one thing – FEED! They are looking for minnows and came be very aggressive on the streamer bite. On calm days you can see these guys eating bug off the surface down by the mouth of the Au Sable and Lake Huron. Currently the young stocked steelhead are moving out of river and into the lake and creates a draw to those fish looking to eat a 6-8″ rainbow – Atlantic Salmon, Lake Trout, Walleye, Steelhead and Smallmouth Bass.
Some do move all the way up the river and are very cool fish!
With the water temps in the river and lake warming up more this year the Smallmouth Bass in Lake Huron are getting very active. Its streamers with sink tip streamer lines right now. Rainbow pattern 6-7″ long, Shad/Shiner patterns 3-5″ and sculpin/goby patterns. Wont be long for these big Smallies to start moving into shallow water and then we switch over to floating lines. I do have dates open for those looking to fly fish Lake Huron this May.
