It’s the holiday season and I would like wish all my friends and clients a Merry Christmas! We are currently right in a great weather pattern for trout fishing here on the Au Sable and throughout Northern Michigan. Snow is pretty much all gone now and lately highs in 40’s have been very common. Winter warm ups like these are ideal for trout fishing and been a real good streamer bite of late.
Not the giant streamers this time of year. Water temps have risen up into middle 30’s but still cold for trout and they are not looking for giant meals. Right now 2-4″ streamers are ideal and often natural colors are top producers. Our top producer this week was an old favorite a down sized Conrad Sculpin. The top colors were olive/tan and olive/yellow. Other productive patterns has been Sparkle Minnows, JJ Special and lots of different lead eyed buggers. This time of you do want to put some good action on the fly but a nice slow retrieve with a few twitches is ideal.
Currently on the Au Sable the mainstream and both the North and South are in great shape to float or wade fish. This time of year it’s if you pick a good day with some rising temps and some clouds it amazing how good the winter bite can be!
