The last couple weeks has produced some good dry fly fishing at times! The Dark Hendrickson as always kicked things off in late April depending on which section of the Au Sable you were fishing. Currently its still hatching in the Big Waters.
Here is what the dark & light Hendrickson duns look like. Great photos taken by Tom Buhr.
Still lots of spinners left in the trees and hoping a couple more heavy spinner falls. The problem of late has been cool evenings. Of late its been seeing clouds of them starting to build over the riffles in the evening hour and then they are gone. Hatch this week has not been heavy but steady in the late afternoons and evenings. Still Dark Hendrickson hatching this week but also the start of the Light Hendrickson. Great time of the year for those that like to be able to see what is going on with evening bugs. Couple days of heat produced good spinner falls going into darkness and some real good trout rising. Stone flies are starting to show up and they sure do produce some quality trout. Up next on the Au Sable is our Sulphur hatch and heavy stones – should come with next batch of warm weather.
Just got this pattern about a week ago from Jerry Regan and been loving it – Hendrickson Emerger. It has produced some nice trout of late and when other patterns don’t work.
Here are some of favorite dry fly patterns for right now:
