Smallmouth Bass on a fly rod is one of the best gamefish and can provide amazing summer fishing in the lower Au Sable or in Lake Huron.
Smallmouth are aggressive and will crush a streamer that imitates baitfish or crayfish. They also provide great topwater action on deerhair bugs, poppers and large dry flies. Once hooked, they put up a fight that put their large-mouthed cousins to shame. When trout fishing slows down, smallmouth action can provide some excellent opportunities, especially in July and August.
